installment of Defying the Odds, and I wanted you to

talk about how you defied the odds and beat cancer.

But also I thought it was perfect

because it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

So, Auntie, how did you first

(04:00.2 - 04:02.5)

find out about your cancer diagnosis?

(04:02.6 - 04:05.9)

Well, Latavia, one day I was getting ready for work,

(04:06.0 - 04:08.8)

and as I was dressing and putting on my brassier,

(04:08.9 - 04:11.0)

I realized there was a knot on the side.

(04:11.1 - 04:14.2)

And I ran immediately, trying to

(04:14.3 - 04:16.7)

find out what the knot was. Wow.

(04:16.7 - 04:19.9)

So you kind of self-diagnosed yourself a little bit.

(04:19.9 - 04:20.3)

I know.

(04:20.4 - 04:23.1)

Mom always told me you do those self breast exams.

(04:23.1 - 04:24.2)

So is that what you did?

(04:24.3 - 04:27.1)

Well, actually, I usually do the self breast exam

(04:27.2 - 04:29.9)

in the shower, but this particular day, I was

(04:29.9 - 04:32.0)

getting ready for work, and I felt it when

(04:32.0 - 04:33.4)

I went to put on my brassier.

(04:33.5 - 04:36.5)

And then I went back and I lie down and I put

(04:36.5 - 04:39.8)

my fingers around just testing around, and I felt it again.

(04:39.9 - 04:41.4)

And I realized at that time

(04:41.6 - 04:43.4)

that, that was something foreign.

(04:43.5 - 04:45.0)

I had not felt that before.

(04:45.0 - 04:47.4)

So did you make an appointment immediately? And

(04:47.5 - 04:49.3)

Who did you make an appointment with?

(04:49.4 - 04:52.6)

So, initially, I called my primary care physician, and

(04:52.7 - 04:55.6)

when I spoke to my primary care physician, she

(04:55.6 - 04:57.9)

told me that she didn't have an appointment available.

(04:58.1 - 05:00.8)

And I told her that it was important, very important

(05:00.9 - 05:04.6)

to me to get a uh an appointment as soon as possible.

(05:04.7 - 05:06.4)

Okay, and what did she say?

(05:06.5 - 05:08.5)

So she was able to get

(05:08.6 - 05:10.5)

me an appointment, check it herself.

(05:10.6 - 05:13.2)

And I even you know fussed a little about that because

(05:13.2 - 05:16.0)

I felt like, ultimately, she wasn't the individual that

(05:16.0 - 05:17.8)

had to see it or handle it.

(05:17.9 - 05:21.0)

So I immediately wanted to go somewhere um where a

(05:21.0 - 05:23.2)

doctor could tell me or an oncologist or someone

(05:23.2 - 05:25.7)

can tell me what exactly was going on.

(05:25.8 - 05:28.4)

But she saw me, she felt the lump, and

(05:28.4 - 05:31.0)

then allowed me to be referred to an oncologist.

(05:31.1 - 05:32.6)

And when you got referred to

(05:32.6 - 05:34.8)

the oncologist, what did they say?

(05:34.9 - 05:37.5)

After I was referred to the oncologist, they wanted

(05:37.5 - 05:40.0)

to have I believe that was a scan.

(05:40.1 - 05:42.7)

The mammogram, the 3D mammogram.

(05:42.8 - 05:44.9)

There were a series of tests

(05:45.0 - 05:46.5)

that they wanted to perform.

(05:46.7 - 05:48.2)

And what did that waiting for

(05:48.2 - 05:49.8)

the test results feel like?

(05:49.8 - 05:51.8)

Oh, Latavia I didn't wait.

(05:51.9 - 05:55.3)

I was pushing through every obstacle (Auntie chuckling) when

(05:55.3 - 05:57.1)

they said there was no appointment.

(05:57.3 - 05:59.0)

I went to the office and

(05:59.0 - 06:01.3)

I stood by waiting for cancellations.

(06:01.4 - 06:06.0)

I was very, very eager to know and to find out.

(06:06.0 - 06:09.0)

And I remember saying, timing is everything.

(06:09.2 - 06:11.3)

Timing is everything, right,

(06:11.4 - 06:13.8)

So you were definitely proactive,

(06:13.9 - 06:15.2)

which is a good thing.

(06:15.3 - 06:17.3)

I'm so glad about that.

(06:17.4 - 06:20.7)

So when the test results finally did come back

(06:20.8 - 06:23.7)

in that short amount of time frame, what did

(06:23.7 - 06:26.2)

they say or what was the result?

(06:26.4 - 06:28.9)

So I remember that the radiologist looked at it

(06:29.0 - 06:31.0)

and he said, yes, there are two lumps there.

(06:31.0 - 06:33.8)

Although I could only feel one, there were two lumps.

(06:33.9 - 06:37.1)

And he advised that he had to do a biopsy.

(06:37.2 - 06:38.9)

And that got me scared again.

(06:39.0 - 06:40.2)

Oh my goodness.

(06:40.3 - 06:41.7)

Oh my goodness. Auntie: My goodness

(06:41.8 - 06:45.2)

What did the biopsy entail? Oh my Lord.

(06:45.3 - 06:48.3)

I don't even want to scare people, but it was

(06:48.4 - 06:52.4)

a long needle they had to uh insert into my breast.

(06:52.6 - 06:55.2)

And that needle had a little thing on the end

(06:55.2 - 06:58.1)

of it that actually clipped a piece of tumor.

(06:58.1 - 06:59.9)

Cause ultimately we found out that it was

(06:59.9 - 07:03.3)

a tumor and it was uh it was positive for cancer.

(07:03.4 - 07:04.3)

(Gasping sound effect)

(07:04.3 - 07:07.2)

So when they came back and they told you that

(07:07.2 - 07:10.6)

it was cancer, what was going through your mind?

(07:10.7 - 07:12.0)

How did you feel?

(07:12.1 - 07:15.1)

Was it hard to process what was going on there?

(07:15.2 - 07:18.1)

Well, I will say that I was very concerned,

(07:18.1 - 07:21.8)

initially afraid, but I believe that you know I had faith

(07:21.9 - 07:24.8)

to believe that whatever is going on, whatever it

(07:24.8 - 07:26.6)

is, I was gonna come out fine.

(07:26.7 - 07:28.8)

And I would stress the importance of keeping

(07:28.8 - 07:31.6)

a positive attitude all the way through.

(07:31.6 - 07:34.9)

No matter what stage they say, no matter what

(07:34.9 - 07:38.3)

they diagnose or how grim it may appear to

(07:38.3 - 07:41.8)

be, I stayed in faith and just kept believing

(07:42.0 - 07:43.6)

I was gonna come out of it. Right.

(07:43.7 - 07:47.0)

So what was the ultimate diagnosis?

(07:47.2 - 07:49.1)

The ultimate diagnosis that I

(07:49.1 - 07:52.7)

was triple negative breast cancer. Wow.

(07:52.8 - 07:55.3)

And is that one of the rare forms

(07:55.4 - 07:57.8)

of breast cancer or is it aggressive?

(07:57.8 - 08:00.4)

I know it was one of the worst.

(08:00.5 - 08:03.0)

I don't know if they would say it's a rare

(08:03.1 - 08:06.5)

form because, you know, some people have positives and negatives,

(08:06.5 - 08:10.7)

but definitely an aggressive form of breast cancer. Yes.

(08:10.8 - 08:12.5)

And was it aggressive for you?

(08:12.6 - 08:16.1)

I believe that from the first day I felt one lump,

(08:16.2 - 08:20.1)

and when they actually did the exam, they found two.

(08:20.2 - 08:21.8)

I would say it was aggressive.

(08:21.9 - 08:24.2)

Did it go anywhere else in the body

(08:24.3 - 08:26.4)

or did it stay in the breast?

(08:26.5 - 08:29.4)

Eventually, after all of the testing was done, they did

(08:29.5 - 08:33.2)

find that it was in two of my lymph nodes. Wow.

(08:33.2 - 08:34.8)

What stage was it in?

(08:34.9 - 08:36.2)

I was stage three.

(08:36.3 - 08:38.9)

But the stage to me, I wasn't

(08:39.0 - 08:41.3)

so much really concerned about the stage.

(08:41.4 - 08:44.8)

I really was concerned about the fact that I was

(08:44.9 - 08:49.6)

diagnosed with cancer, you know, even if they said one, two, three

(08:49.7 - 08:52.2)

or four, I probably would have felt the same way.

(08:52.3 - 08:55.8)

I was devastated and I was just trying to

(08:55.8 - 08:59.4)

figure out how did this happen to me? Right.

(08:59.5 - 09:01.5)

What was going through your mind?

(09:01.6 - 09:03.3)

Was it like, oh, my God, I got

(09:03.4 - 09:06.2)

cancer and this is going to be scary.

(09:06.3 - 09:07.9)

I don't want to do chemo.

(09:08.0 - 09:09.6)

What was going through your mind?

(09:09.7 - 09:11.0)

How did you feel?

(09:11.1 - 09:12.8)

What were you thinking to yourself?

(09:12.8 - 09:14.5)

I was thinking that I needed

(09:14.5 - 09:17.1)

treatment and I needed it immediately. Yeah, great.

(09:17.2 - 09:19.1)

You were focused on getting better, which

(09:19.1 - 09:21.1)

I think that's the point of it. Right.

(09:21.2 - 09:24.9)

Focus on having a great outcome instead of focusing

(09:25.0 - 09:27.4)

on the grim things that they may say.

(09:27.5 - 09:30.7)

Because at the end of the day, ultimately, doctors have to

(09:30.8 - 09:33.4)

give you the reality of what it may look like.

(09:33.5 - 09:36.6)

And then all your treatment options, did they say

(09:36.7 - 09:39.9)

what your treatment options were when you went for

(09:39.9 - 09:41.9)

that first appointment or did you have to do

(09:41.9 - 09:44.4)

a follow up appointment to find out?

(09:44.4 - 09:46.9)

I went for the first appointment and

(09:47.0 - 09:48.4)

they had all of the results.

(09:48.5 - 09:51.0)

So being that they had all of the results as well

(09:51.0 - 09:54.4)

as the test results from the biopsy, they were able to

(09:54.5 - 09:57.6)

tell me what my treatment was going to look like and

(09:57.7 - 09:59.9)

that it should start as soon as possible.

(09:59.9 - 10:49.2)

What was the treatment protocol?

(10:51.4 - 10:56.1)

The treatment protocol for me was a medication very

(10:56.2 - 11:01.1)

strong called Carboplatin and a medication called Paclitaxel

(11:01.2 - 11:04.0)

I will never forget those two names as long as I live.

(11:04.0 - 11:05.9)

So I had to take a series of one

(11:05.9 - 11:08.5)

first and then a series of the other.

(11:08.6 - 11:11.9)

Carboplatin was very difficult, it was the strongest of

(11:11.9 - 11:14.2)

the two for me, and Carboplatin was the

(11:14.2 - 11:16.4)

one that made me more sick and the

(11:16.4 - 11:18.5)

Paclitaxel was more easier to deal with

(11:18.5 - 11:21.0)

As a medication, it was less um side

(11:21.1 - 11:22.7)

effects from the Paclitaxel for me.

(11:22.8 - 11:24.9)

What side effects did you experience?

(11:25.0 - 11:26.6)

I know everybody is an individual,

(11:26.8 - 11:28.8)

so tell me what you experienced.

(11:28.9 - 11:32.2)

Yes, so I would say Paclitaxel made me fatigued more,

(11:32.3 - 11:35.3)

and the Carboplatin is the one that I would feel

(11:35.3 - 11:37.9)

like did the most physical damage to me.

(11:37.9 - 11:40.3)

Carboplatin was the one that caused me

(11:40.4 - 11:41.7)

to feel like I couldn't eat.

(11:41.8 - 11:44.4)

I was nauseous many times, and I believe

(11:44.5 - 11:45.8)

that's how I lost so much weight.

(11:45.8 - 11:47.2)

I really could not eat because

(11:47.3 - 11:49.2)

of my stomach constantly being upset.

(11:49.3 - 11:52.0)

I had severe constipation.

(11:52.1 - 11:53.6)

I remember that not being able to

(11:53.6 - 11:56.3)

go to the bathroom and at times

(11:56.4 - 11:59.0)

becoming very nauseous, but never throwing up.

(11:59.1 - 12:00.4)

And that was strange to me.

(12:00.5 - 12:03.2)

I was constantly nauseous from the

(12:03.2 - 12:05.7)

medication but never actually threw up.

(12:05.8 - 12:08.1)

But times that I was able to eat, it

(12:08.1 - 12:11.8)

was you know mostly soup or vegetables, very light things.

(12:11.9 - 12:14.3)

I wasn't able to eat heavy meals at all.

(12:14.3 - 12:16.6)

And I believe again that's what caused me to lose

(12:16.6 - 12:19.8)

so much weight and I couldn't walk very well.

(12:19.9 - 12:21.3)

I was weak.

(12:21.4 - 12:23.1)

I was always sleeping.

(12:23.1 - 12:25.6)

But Carboplatin, I think that one took

(12:25.7 - 12:29.0)

the most toll on my body. Right, right. Wow.

(12:29.1 - 12:32.7)

Did you end up losing your hair? Oh, my goodness.

(12:32.7 - 12:35.2)

That was one of the worst for me.

(12:35.2 - 12:37.7)

(12:37.7 - 12:41.6)

I started my dreadlocks in 2007. I believe.

(12:41.7 - 12:44.8)

And I cut all of my hair down very low to start them.

(12:44.8 - 12:46.5)

So I always called them my babies.

(12:46.5 - 12:49.2)

I believe that one of the things that I

(12:49.2 - 12:52.3)

even asked in advance about losing my hair.

(12:52.3 - 12:54.4)

Because they said there was some type of heating

(12:54.5 - 12:57.3)

cap that would help your hair stay on that

(12:57.4 - 13:00.5)

you can have ordered and pay additional monies for.

(13:00.6 - 13:01.8)

But it was no guarantee.

(13:01.9 - 13:04.0)

So with that being said, I decided to

(13:04.0 - 13:06.2)

just go through the process and see whether

(13:06.2 - 13:08.0)

or not uh my hair would come out.

(13:08.0 - 13:10.2)

I did pretty good for the first couple of months, uh

(13:10.3 - 13:13.3)

but when that Carboplatin started oh, my goodness.

(13:13.4 - 13:15.5)

That Carboplatin is the one that

(13:15.6 - 13:18.8)

started causing my hair to come out. Just got weak.

(13:18.8 - 13:21.3)

And I remember going shopping, and when I turned

(13:21.3 - 13:23.5)

off the car, the first lock fell out.

(13:23.5 - 13:24.5)

I was so devastated.

(13:24.6 - 13:26.4)

And that's probably the first time that I actually

(13:26.5 - 13:28.9)

cried, now that I think about it, that I

(13:28.9 - 13:31.6)

actually cried even after getting the diagnosis, when I

(13:31.6 - 13:33.2)

saw my hair begin to fall out.

(13:33.2 - 13:35.3)

Why was that so hard for you?

(13:35.4 - 13:36.9)

Well, first of all, nobody wants

(13:37.0 - 13:39.3)

to be bald, that's first of all.

(13:39.3 - 13:41.6)

And it was so hard for me because

(13:41.7 - 13:44.4)

I had grown them, so now having them

(13:44.5 - 13:47.0)

longer halfway down my back, that's one thing.

(13:47.0 - 13:49.2)

I didn't want to see them falling out one by

(13:49.3 - 13:51.8)

one by one after I lost two, that's when I

(13:51.8 - 13:54.4)

decided that I would just cut off the rest myself.

(13:54.5 - 13:57.7)

And did it feel liberating to cut off your hair?

(13:57.8 - 13:59.3)

Or were you like, no way,

(13:59.4 - 14:01.2)

this can't be happening to me?

(14:01.3 - 14:03.0)

I wouldn't say it was liberating.

(14:03.1 - 14:05.8)

I was still devastated to have to cut my hair.

(14:05.8 - 14:08.3)

But again, I did pray and ask for faith

(14:08.4 - 14:09.8)

that I would be able to go through the

(14:09.8 - 14:12.3)

process and I cut them out one by one.

(14:12.4 - 14:14.9)

But I preferred to cut it myself cuz I didn't

(14:15.0 - 14:18.0)

want to see it continue dropping off, like, every day,

(14:18.0 - 14:20.8)

a piece of hair coming out or a dreadlock being

(14:20.8 - 14:23.7)

found under my pillow or in my bed.

(14:23.8 - 14:26.6)

Just you know those things I just didn't want to face.

(14:26.7 - 14:29.6)

That hurt me more, finding them and seeing them

(14:29.7 - 14:33.6)

falling out than just taking you know the scissors and cutting

(14:33.6 - 14:35.8)

them off one by one by one myself.

(14:35.9 - 14:38.4)

And I still have them till this day. Wow.

(14:38.4 - 14:41.9)

Is there any part of the process that was

(14:45.5 - 14:48.1)

really, really difficult for you, taking the chemo

(14:48.1 - 14:49.2)

I would just say overall,

(14:49.3 - 14:50.8)

that chemo was very difficult.

(14:50.9 - 14:54.0)

It was difficult for me to get the port for them to

(14:54.0 - 14:57.9)

put the port in under the skin over my right breast where

(14:57.9 - 15:01.4)

they had to install it, and put the pieces together so that

(15:01.4 - 15:03.7)

they can use that area to put the medication.

(15:03.8 - 15:05.3)

So they took blood from there, they

(15:05.3 - 15:07.2)

put the medication in that port.

(15:07.3 - 15:09.7)

And it was difficult just having that

(15:09.7 - 15:11.4)

under my skin all the time.

(15:11.4 - 15:16.2)

It was also difficult just having chemo administered as often

(15:16.2 - 15:18.8)

as I did, just having it running through me.

(15:18.9 - 15:20.9)

It was not the best feeling, but I

(15:20.9 - 15:22.4)

knew that it was going to help me.

(15:22.5 - 15:23.9)

So I wanted it.

(15:23.9 - 15:25.4)

And then again, I didn't want it.

(15:25.4 - 15:27.5)

So, I don't know if you can understand that.

(15:27.6 - 15:30.1)

Sometimes you know desperately you need to have

(15:30.2 - 15:32.3)

something, but you really don't want it.

(15:32.3 - 15:33.8)

And that's how I felt, because I knew it

(15:33.8 - 15:36.1)

was gonna just make me sick, make me

(15:36.1 - 15:37.9)

weak, and cause me to lose my hair.

(15:38.0 - 15:39.8)

So those things that I mentioned before

(15:39.8 - 15:41.4)

are the things that did happen.

(15:41.4 - 15:44.2)

How many times a week did you have to do chemo?

(15:44.3 - 15:45.8)

I don't remember.

(15:45.9 - 15:48.8)

I think I had chemo once a week.

(15:48.9 - 15:52.0)

Yes, once every week for several months.

(15:52.1 - 15:54.1)

And then after that, I had radiation.

(15:54.2 - 15:56.4)

I had a radiation that was part of my protocol.

(15:56.5 - 15:59.2)

So after the Carboplatin and the Paclitaxel, I had to

(15:59.2 - 16:03.6)

have radiation, targeted radiation that targeted the area where the

(16:03.6 - 16:06.4)

breast cancer was so that I would be able to

(16:06.5 - 16:09.6)

have that additional help to kill off any additional cells

(16:09.7 - 16:12.5)

that might have been left behind after the chemo.

(16:12.6 - 16:13.5)

So that was important.

(16:13.6 - 16:16.2)

And that was, that was a better process, if you will. You know.

(16:16.3 - 16:17.8)

Nobody wants to have radiation.

(16:17.9 - 16:20.3)

It left me a little burnt after it all.

(16:20.4 - 16:22.8)

But then they gave you a cream and eventually your

(16:22.9 - 16:25.7)

skin comes back to its regular color and texture.

(16:25.8 - 16:28.1)

So the radiation was the better of

(16:28.1 - 16:30.1)

them all and it was less time.

(16:30.2 - 16:33.4)

And I would say the radiation was um not

(16:33.4 - 16:35.1)

so bad compared to all the rest.

(16:35.2 - 16:38.6)

And what was it like sitting there getting the chemo?

(16:38.7 - 16:41.1)

Did you feel like you had support

(16:41.2 - 16:43.5)

even in the facility you were in?

(16:43.6 - 16:45.9)

like dietitians, a priest, different people coming around

with snacks and things of that nature.

You had a TV, you had a private room.

So the treatment overall was good.

It was in a good place.

And you were allowed to have family

and friends with you, one or two.

And the people that they had coming around you for prayer,

if you desire to have prayer, or even the social worker

or anyone that could help you, they provided it.

So I would say the services that I was provided

were good services, and I am grateful for them.

And Mary had read these books about cancer and

different individuals going through the process of chemo.

And she shared with me, as well as

(18:54.2 - 18:56.7)

the dietitian, that it was important to change

(18:56.8 - 18:59.2)

the eating habits and to start juicing.

(18:59.2 - 19:00.1)

And I think that was

(19:00.2 - 19:03.0)

great information, very helpful information.

(19:03.2 - 19:04.6)

And I think it's important that we

(19:04.7 - 19:09.2)

understand that our eating habits must change. Dr.

Mary, that's what we call her, dr. Mary.

She had the juices and the organic vegetables

that we had to take, the organic fruit

(19:16.8 - 19:18.6)

that was important that we take. Uh

You know, just letting us to know that it was

important to change the diet by the books and

(19:23.4 - 19:26.4)

the information that she had read and found out.

So she was very helpful and instrumental

in getting me started in that direction. Yup.

And she talked a little bit about the

protocol she used, which was the Gerson Therapy.

But did you find it hard to kind of change

your eating style, kind of change what you drink?

And I know everything has to be organic.

Did you find that part of it hard?

No, I did not find it hard.

I didn't like all of the juices because Mary can make

But I knew that it was necessary

and an important part of my healing. You know

The dietitian tells us that you know cancer loves sugar.

So it's important that we omit sugar from our diet.

And those juices, when you have those organic vegetables and you

(20:13.3 - 20:16.7)

have that chard, and you juice it, and you have carrots

(20:16.7 - 20:19.7)

and you juice it, and the Granny Smith green apples I

(20:19.7 - 20:22.9)

don't think I ever even ate a Granny Smith green apple

(20:22.9 - 20:25.2)

in my life, but today I love them. (Auntie laughing)

(20:25.4 - 20:28.9)

So I think it's important that we be willing to

(20:28.9 - 20:32.3)

make the change and realize that this is a part

(20:32.3 - 20:34.5)

of our life for the rest of our life.

(20:34.6 - 20:35.9)

And I also think it's important

(20:36.0 - 20:37.6)

that we drink those juices.

(20:37.7 - 20:39.1)

We eat differently.

(20:39.3 - 20:42.1)

Now I'm out of treatment, I think, two years,

and I'm not gonna say once in a

while I don't have something I desire to have.

But I am very, very still, very much serious about

(20:50.3 - 20:52.8)

juicing and doing my very best to eat right.

Once in a blue moon, I might go to

City Island or somewhere to have some seafood, but

I don't eat fried food till this day.

I still don't have sugar in my diet till this day.

I don't eat cakes and cookies

and things of that nature.

I still try to follow the dietitian's advice as

well as do the juicing and things that uh that Mary

found out about and teaches everybody else to try

to help them live a better life.

It's important that we eat and drink to live. Right.

I think that is definitely well said.

You did say you no longer have treatment,

so does that mean you're in remission?

They call it remission.

the woods, but not out of the woods.

So again, in regards to remission, I am grateful

and thankful so much that my faith brought me

through, and I am grateful for that.

I am grateful for my support system,

(21:52.0 - 21:53.6)

my family members and loved ones.

(21:53.7 - 21:55.6)

I am so grateful for all of them.

And I am also grateful for just having the

(21:58.7 - 22:01.4)

knowledge to know that it's a continual battle.

(22:01.5 - 22:04.7)

It's a continual battle because they say, the doctors

(22:04.8 - 22:08.0)

say that any time it can come back anytime,

(22:08.0 - 22:10.3)

we can hear cancer is somewhere else.

(22:10.3 - 22:12.8)

So there's no guarantee with cancer.

(22:12.9 - 22:15.2)

But for me, there is a guarantee

(22:15.3 - 22:18.0)

that I can make the difference.

(22:18.1 - 22:20.0)

And I believe I make the difference.

(22:20.1 - 22:25.2)

And I have an obligation to myself to eat right,

(22:25.2 - 22:29.8)

to do right, and not reintroduce those things that I

(22:29.8 - 22:33.8)

once loved so much, as the sweet teas or sodas

(22:33.9 - 22:37.6)

or ice cream and cheese and things that are really

(22:37.7 - 22:41.1)

ultimately not good for us because we understand today that

(22:41.2 - 22:43.2)

most diseases start in our gut.

(22:43.3 - 22:47.5)

So if we can change our intake of food and

(22:47.6 - 22:50.9)

be mindful that they can ultimately hurt us in the

(22:50.9 - 22:53.3)

long run, then we would realize that there are supplements

(22:53.4 - 22:56.0)

out there that are important to take, there's vitamins that

(22:56.0 - 22:59.3)

are important to take, there's juicing that we must make

(22:59.3 - 23:01.0)

a part of our daily diet.

(23:01.0 - 23:04.1)

And if we do these things, I believe the

(23:04.1 - 23:06.2)

doctor didn't say, but I believe that we have

(23:06.2 - 23:09.9)

a better chance at survival and a better chance

(23:10.1 - 23:12.5)

at ringing that bell for the rest of our

(23:12.6 - 23:15.7)

life and not just a temporary thing like remission.

(23:15.7 - 23:17.3)

Remission can be temporary.

(23:17.4 - 23:19.5)

But if we can do the right thing and get the strength

(23:19.5 - 23:23.0)

and the faith to do what is right, even when it's difficult

(23:23.1 - 23:25.0)

for us, then I believe that we can make it.

We can all make it if we try.

(23:26.5 - 23:28.3)

And I think that is very well said.

And I think that's sometimes the hard part for people is that you know

(23:32.0 - 23:35.6)

I have to do all these different things, change what I eat,

(23:35.7 - 23:39.2)

I have to change what I drink, I have to change where

(23:39.2 - 23:41.3)

I go, I have to change what I buy. Right.

(23:41.4 - 23:43.5)

So they're so focused on the change.

(23:43.6 - 23:47.5)

And sometimes people may feel like, oh, I'm changing all

(23:47.6 - 23:51.0)

of these things in my life, all of these factors.

(23:51.0 - 23:54.1)

Sometimes getting rid of things that I absolutely love

(23:54.1 - 23:56.1)

to eat right so that I can live.

(23:56.2 - 23:58.1)

But there's no guarantee that I'm

(23:58.1 - 23:59.1)

gonna make it out, right?

(23:59.2 - 24:00.8)

And it can always come back.

(24:00.9 - 24:03.4)

So for some people it's like, welp, I might as

(24:03.5 - 24:08.3)

well live, you know live my days out if that's all I have,

(24:08.4 - 24:11.3)

or live my months out because all this changing I

(24:11.3 - 24:13.7)

have to do, it may be for nothing.

(24:13.7 - 24:16.9)

I know that wasn't your mindset, but can you

(24:16.9 - 24:19.6)

understand why some people may feel that way?

(24:19.7 - 24:21.5)

And what would you tell them?

(24:21.6 - 24:26.5)

I can absolutely understand today Latavia why some people might

(24:26.5 - 24:28.7)

feel that way, because we have seen it, right?

(24:28.8 - 24:31.1)

We have seen some people change

(24:31.2 - 24:33.5)

significantly and still they die.

(24:33.6 - 24:36.2)

And that's the ultimate thing that we don't want to do.

Nobody wants to die from cancer or any other disease or

(24:39.8 - 24:41.9)

we don't even want to die when it's time to die

(24:41.9 - 24:44.2)

because we understand that we will not stay here.

(24:44.2 - 24:47.2)

Ultimately, we will all one day lead this earth.

(24:47.2 - 24:49.7)

However, going through the struggle of disease,

(24:49.8 - 24:50.9)

we don't want to do that.

(24:50.9 - 24:54.3)

But if we're facing that, an average individual will say,

(24:54.4 - 24:56.0)

well, let me eat what I want, let me do

(24:56.0 - 24:57.9)

what I want, let me get all these things off

(24:58.0 - 25:01.5)

my bucket list because ultimately I'm dying from this thing.

(25:01.5 - 25:05.4)

And that's where we lose even faster and go down

(25:05.6 - 25:10.0)

even faster because we already set our mind to death.

(25:10.0 - 25:11.9)

I think it's important that we set our

(25:11.9 - 25:15.7)

minds and our hearts towards life and living.

(25:15.8 - 25:18.9)

And when we do that, then we have that zeal

(25:18.9 - 25:23.8)

and desire to fight, to live, change, to live.

(25:23.8 - 25:28.4)

So ultimately, even if it defeats me, I have done my

(25:28.5 - 25:32.0)

very best for me and I know that in doing that,

(25:32.0 - 25:34.9)

I cause myself to live a little longer, no matter what,

(25:34.9 - 25:39.4)

no matter the ultimate end result, I changed the narrative.

(25:39.5 - 25:42.5)

That I will live longer, I will get better and

(25:42.5 - 25:46.1)

I will be here to see my greatgrandchildren.

(25:46.1 - 25:49.6)

You put these positive goals in your mind and you go

(25:49.6 - 25:52.9)

forward and you do what you need to do to survive.

(25:53.0 - 25:56.3)

Because ultimately we wanna live. We all wanna live.

(25:56.3 - 25:58.6)

So give it your best shot, go it

(25:58.7 - 26:01.6)

your best way, live life to the fullest.

(26:01.6 - 26:03.1)

And what does that mean for me?

(26:03.2 - 26:06.6)

Eating my best, doing my best and not worrying

(26:06.7 - 26:08.8)

about whether or not it's gonna come back,

(26:08.9 - 26:12.7)

not worrying about when it's gonna happen. Just live.

(26:12.7 - 26:15.8)

And if I could live and eat and drink my

(26:15.8 - 26:18.8)

best for my gut, I'm gonna do it. Again.

You know what I mean? Right. It's a disease.

At the end of the day, doctors have

to give you the best outcome, worst outcome,

(26:53.3 - 26:54.8)

they have to give you the whole gamut.

So taking it one day at a time, focusing

(26:57.7 - 27:00.6)

on the positive, things that you wanna do

(27:00.6 - 27:04.0)

when you get over cancer, all of that helps.

Focusing on a higher power, whether that be

(27:06.5 - 27:09.1)

God, whether that be Allah, whoever you believe

(27:09.2 - 27:12.6)

in, just focus on the positive. Yes.

And don't focus on the negative.

With that being said, you

will get overwhelmed sometimes.

Was there any point in the journey

I believe I definitely was

overwhelmed during the chemo process.

That was very difficult.

It was a lot to you know to just take in and try to

understand, because for the life of me, I just saw it

as you know healing on one side and hurting you on another, right.

Because it even kills good cells.

So it was very overwhelming.

So I think, like you said, it's important to stay

positive, important to have faith, important to trust and know

that on the inside of you, you have the power

to fight, you have the power to stand.

Even when I couldn't stand, even when I

couldn't walk, I was determined to walk.

I was determined to get that cane.

I was determined to try to do some things on my own.

Even when people tried to help me, sometimes

I was frustrated even with the help.

And I didn't always have the best attitude.

You know, I had to go back and say, I'm

sorry for what I did or what I said.

because of frustration and being overwhelmed.

So I would say, even if you find

your family members there, try to understand them.

They're just in a bad place at the

moment, but eventually they will understand that it

was just you know taking a toll on them.
